Destination Overview & Background
Dating back to 1371 under King Wickramabahu III of Gampola, the grounds served as a royal pleasure pavilion before being formally converted into a British botanical institution in 1821 by Alexander Moon. Cradled on three sides by the broad currents of Sri Lanka's longest river, the Mahaweli, Peradeniya enjoys ideal temperate and moist microclimatic conditions.
The garden is internationally celebrated for its National Orchid House, which showcases an extraordinary collection of over 300 varieties of exotic indigenous and hybrid orchids. Another breathtaking focal point is the Great Javan Fig Tree (Ficus benjamina), whose sprawling canopy extends like an immense living umbrella across 2,420 square meters of central lawn.
Broad avenues lined with stately Royal Palms, cannonball trees, spice gardens, and bamboo groves bordering the river make Peradeniya one of the most serene cultural retreats in the central province.
