Son of Aruna and nephew of Garuda, the aging Jatayu was a beloved friend of King Dasharatha. Hearing Sita's cries from the sky, Jatayu threw himself against Ravana’s airborne chariot, shattering weapons and killing Ravana's mules before Ravana severed his wings with the Chandrahas sword. Mortally wounded, he held on to life until he could report Sita’s abduction to Rama, who performed his funeral rites with the affection due to a father.
