Towering like a colossal vertical fortress over the mist-soaked road from Nuwara Eliya to Badulla, Hakgala Rock is one of the highest and most imposing geological crags in Sri Lanka. In regional folk etymology, the name is derived from Hanu-Gala (Jaw Rock), referencing the ancient belief that a massive fragment of the Himalayan Gandhamadhana mountain slipped from beneath Lord Hanuman's chin or jaw as he descended directly over Princess Seetha's captivity in Ashoka Vatika.
The Dramatic Presence Over Ashoka Vatika
Hakgala Rock rises almost vertically behind the colorful Dravidian towers of the Seetha Amman Temple. The contrast between the sheer, black granite precipice and the lush temperate greenery clinging to its fissures creates an atmosphere of primordial grandeur.
Local folk legends recount that Ravana cultivated his most private royal pleasure gardens at the base of this massive rock, using its towering presence to shelter Seetha from prying eyes while surrounding her with exotic blossoms, singing birds, and crystal mountain streams.

Highland Montane Flora & Botanical Haven
Because of its high elevation (exceeding 2,170 meters) and dense cloud cover, Hakgala fosters an extraordinary microclimate. British botanists Dr. G.H.K. Thwaites and William Nock established the Hakgala Botanical Gardens in 1861 specifically to introduce cinchona (quinine) trees and temperate flora to the island.
The endemic cloud forest clinging to Hakgala's sheer face features dwarf rhododendrons (Rhododendron arboreum zeylanicum), highland tree ferns, wild orchids, and mountain lichens that reinforce the mythic memory of Himalayan flora transplanted onto tropical soil.
How to Experience Hakgala
Located just 9 km south of Nuwara Eliya town along the A5 highway, Hakgala is an indispensable pilgrimage stop. Travelers typically visit Seetha Amman Temple and explore Hakgala Botanical Gardens before continuing their descent toward Ella via Ravana Falls.
